Introduction

Mythology is defined as a collection of  myths about the origin and history of people and their deities, ancestors and lives.  With Edith Hamilton's retelling,  these stories of gods and heroes tell the us about the key dramas, the primary characters, the triumphs, failures, fears, and hopes first narrated thousands of years ago.  These myths show us how the ancients saw their own place in the world and how their stories have inspired human creativity from antiquity to the present day and laid the foundation stones of world literature.

 Situation

The Olympian gods have hit on hard times.  Almost nobody worships them nowadays, so they may need to find jobs—though it’s hard to take orders when you’ve ruled the universe. Because of this, several of the gods and goddesses have decided to pool their expertise, and form businesses of their own. What would a good line of work be for a goddess of the harvest, or for a god of thieves?  It will take some thought, but with a little time and effort, surely their talents can still be useful.

The Task

You, together with 1—2 partners, will choose one Olympian god or goddess each to represent.  Think about how your godly talents might combine in the business world.  For instance, what if Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, joined forces with Hermes, who (among other things) is the god of messengers?  Maybe they could start a business delivering love letters?

Once you have your business idea, you should create a logo—a design that reflects something about your gods’ and goddesses’ combined talents in this line of work.  (A heart with wings for the love letters delivery business?) Using this logo and either original drawings or images from the Web (you will have to add color by hand for full credit for Web images), create a tri-fold brochure advertising your business.

You will be asked to present your finished brochure and business idea to the class.  You should do this in character as your chosen Olympian god or goddess.  You may bring in props, visuals (PowerPoints, stand-up displays, or product samples) if you wish.  You should remain in character for the duration of your presentation.

Your tri-fold brochure should have:
