IV. Assessment. Your grade will be determined as follows.

SPEAKING/ORAL EXAMS 25%

HOMEWORK 25%

QUIZZES/TESTS/PROJECTS 50%

Grades are cumulative. In other words, after the first quarter of a semester, the grade does not start over but continues to the end of the semester. Quarter grades, therefore, are basically a report of your progress to that point, and are not counted separately and averaged together at the end of the semester. You will be given a grade update about every 5 weeks at the mid-quarter, quarter and semester, to be signed by your parents.

Speaking. You will be required to participate in class by responding to questions in French. Any sincere attempt to answer a question will be rewarded with a 10-euro bill which you will collect and turn in at the end of each grading period, or as directed by the teacher. About five per week will give you a 90% on participation. You can earn up to 110% by participating more. You may also earn euros by asking questions in French, making comments in French, sharing French souvenirs and postcards, making comments in French, sharing letters to/from penpal, sharing articles on French-related topics, or see me with your suggestions.

Homework. Homework will be assigned every day except before major vacations (one week or more). Homework Lab. Homework Lab will be held every day at lunch or by appointment. You have the ability to achieve whatever grade you want in my class. Set a goal for yourself and I will do everything I can to help you achieve your goal. If you are not obtaining the results that you desire, please ask me for suggestions or come to Homework Lab.

Quizzes/Tests/Projects. Quizzes will be given as needed, with advance warning. You will be given written and listening tests at the end of each unit. There will be one major project due each semester. You will be given a detailed grading rubric when the time comes. Students will create a book, video or PowerPoint presentation. Due to excessive use of internet translators, all writing for projects must be done in class with a dictionary. NO EXCEPTIONS!

Final Exam. Your final exam will consist of one of the quarterly Speaking Exams, and the score will be the average of the two quarterly Speaking Exams, which will be recorded in your Speaking Grade.

V. Text and other Materials. You will be using Discovering French Rouge and its corresponding Activity Book. You may leave your activity book in the bin in my classroom, but I will not be held responsible for lost or destroyed workbooks. Of course I will do my best to safeguard them. Workbooks may be written in and will be replaced every year. Please bring a pen or pencil, paper, a notebook, and your textbook with you every day. I also advise you to purchase 3x5 index cards to make flash cards with. If you buy white, pink, and blue cards you will be able to distinguish between verbs, feminine nouns and masculine nouns more easily. Dictionaries are available to check out through the library, but if you plan to continue your studies in French you might purchase one of your own.

VI. Other information.

Makeup Policy. Your performance in this class will depend highly upon the amount of time you spend here. Excessive absences, therefore, will ultimately reduce your grade. You may make up homework, quizzes, tests, or any other assignment only when you have an excused absence. Absent homework assignments are due the next class meeting after you return and will not be accepted after that. Half credit will NOT be given under any circumstances. You will be granted two "free" late passes per quarter, to use if you fail to do your homework for a reason other than an excused absence. If you are absent on a Tuesday, and at school on Wednesday, you must stop by to get your assignment due on Thursday. It will not be accepted late. Makeup tests and quizzes must be taken during Homework Lab hours only. You may not miss my class time to make up a test or quiz for me, OR FOR ANY OTHER TEACHER. Make-ups must be taken within one week following the last day of your absence or they will be recorded as a zero.

Tardy Policy. First tardy—warning. Second tardy—parent contact. Third tardy—immediate lunch-time detention with teacher. Fourth tardy and beyond—referred to Vice Principal as per tardy policy outlined in student handbook.

Campus Passes. You will be allowed to leave the class two times per quarter. It is up to you to decide which times are most important to you. If you fail to go to the restroom or go to your locker during break or lunch, please remember that you will only have two opportunities per quarter to do so during class, unless it is an extreme emergency, of course.

French Films. Many French films are unrated which means that I have to preview them to determine whether or not they are suitable for high school viewing. I have a collection of films that I’ve recorded, being very careful to erase scenes which are inappropriate. My students believe that I am TOO careful! French films are different than American films, which is why I show them. The subject matter is more sophisticated, more "film noir," and less slapstick than your average American teenage film. French films generally force the viewer to reflect upon philosophical issues. I try to pick films which will interest the students yet remain truly "French." Blockbuster of Seaside has an excellent selection of French films from which I choose, as well as my own collection.

Field Trips. Annual field trips to Bechler’s Pâtisserie and DLI Open House. This year, we have the opportunity to go to Cirque du Soleil’s Corteo in San Jose on Friday, January 27th at 4:00pm. I have purchased 52 student tickets, which cost $76.50 plus $14.50 for charter bus transportation for a total of $91.00 per student. Students may raise money for the trips by selling French candy at school, or can write a check to "ASB French Club" for the total. The deadline for purchasing the tickets is Wednesday, October 26th.

Behavior Expectations. My classroom rules are the following.

  1. In order to facilitate roll call, students will be seated in their assigned seat when the bell rings.

  2. In order to start class on time and to use class time efficiently, students will stop talking when the bell rings and wait for instruction.

  3. In order to have Mrs. Chupka’s and each student’s voice and opinion heard and valued, students will raise their hand to indicate a desire to speak, and will wait to be called on to speak. Students will not interrupt Mrs. Chupka or another student when s/he is speaking. Students will not have private conversations while Mrs. Chupka or another student is speaking.

  4. In order to practice the basic rules of common respect, we will all treat each other with respect throughout the entire class period. This includes but is not limited to speaking to one another in a positive manner, being discreet when there is a problem, following directions, keeping the enthusiasm during games at an appropriate level, and helping one another when asked.

  5. In order to allow for freedom of speech and freedom of personal expression, students will be warned with a ring of the bell when the violation of the rules will result in a detention. Every two detentions will result in a step on the behavior contract. Students will be asked to stay after class to receive their detention/behavior contract.

  6. In order to avoid public conflicts, students will approach Mrs. Chupka with a concern regarding a detention/behavior contract before or after class or at the break so that we can discuss it privately.

  7. In order to have an orderly closure to class, to use class time efficiently, and to ensure that each student knows the assignment, students will remain quietly seated at the end of class until dismissed by Mrs. Chupka.
