COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Drama 1 is designed to give the beginning drama student an overview of the techniques of acting including vocal work, movement, and performance. The class will consists of acting techniques, movement for stage, directing, design, and critique. An ensemble approach will be emphasized to create a productive and positive performance environment.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

  1. To develop performance skills in vocal control, movement, acting, memorization and theater etiquette.
  2. To develop a general knowledge of theater history.
  3. To develop skills in performing various scenes and monologues.
  4. To develop skills in improvisation.
  5. To expand general knowledge of theater vocabulary.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES:

  1. Students will memorize a number of movement pieces, monologues and scenes.
  2. Students will rehearse and perform numerous monologues, and scenes.
  3. Students will participate in critiquing of scenes.

CLASS STANDARDS AND PROCEDURES

  1. All students are expected to know and follow the school and classroom rules of Pacific Grove High School.

  2. Student Responsibilities:
    1. Arrive to class on time.
    2. Participate in class activities and cooperate with the teacher.
    3. Complete all classwork on time.
    4. Come to class with Drama binder.
    5. Be respectful of school and classroom property
    6. When rehearsing outside try and stay in an area close to the drama room door.
    7. You may NOT use the phone during class, so do not ask.
    8. Participate! It’s what drama is all about.
  3. Homework will be assigned once or twice a week and will usually consist of memorization. Be warned that failure to learn lines will affect other members of the ensemble.
  4. Attendance is crucial part of the ensemble work, so it is important that you not miss class. If you miss class on the day of a presentation and your partner/group is unable to perform, you will immediately receive only half credit for the assignment. If you know you will be absent on the day of a performance, it is your responsibility to make prior arrangements with the group and your teacher.
  5. Tardies are a nuisance. If you arrive late to class more than 2 times, you will be required to attend detention. If you are repeatedly tardy, you will receive Saturday School.
  6. Students’ grades will be assessed according to their performance in the following areas:
    1. In-class rehearsal time.
    2. Participation in class activities.
    3. Memorization.
    4. Performance of monologues and scenes.
    5. Individual class leadership and cooperation.
  7. Students grades will be determined based on the following areas:
    1. Class performances – 50%
    2. Participation/Rehearsal – 25%
    3. Homework/Tests – 25%
